Does Insurance Cover Your Roof Damage?

Most Long Island homeowners don't realize their roof damage is fully covered — until they get an underpaid claim. Standard homeowners insurance covers sudden and accidental roof damage from wind, hail, falling trees, and storm events. What it doesn't cover is normal wear and tear — and insurance companies often try to classify legitimate storm damage as "wear and tear" to reduce your payout.

Greene Group Construction Corp. has helped hundreds of Nassau and Suffolk County homeowners fight back against underpaid roof claims. As a GAF-certified roofing contractor, our damage assessments carry significant weight with insurance adjusters — we know exactly what to document and how to present it.

Long Island is particularly vulnerable to roof damage from nor'easters, tropical storms, hail, and high winds. If your roof has sustained any damage in the past few years, a storm event is likely responsible — even if you didn't notice it right away.

⚠️ Don't Accept the First Offer

Initial insurance estimates for roof damage are frequently too low. Insurance adjusters are trained to minimize payouts. Having a licensed, certified roofing contractor document and advocate for your damage significantly increases your final settlement.

Roof Damage Claim FAQ

How do I know if my roof damage is covered by insurance?

If the damage was caused by a storm, high winds, hail, or a falling tree, it's almost certainly covered. Call us for a free inspection — we'll tell you exactly what we see and whether it warrants a claim before you involve your insurer.

Will filing a roof claim raise my rates?

In New York, insurers cannot raise your rates solely because you filed one weather-related claim. We can help you evaluate whether a claim makes financial sense given your deductible and coverage.

My roof is old — will insurance still cover storm damage?

Yes, though older roofs may be settled on an Actual Cash Value (ACV) basis rather than Replacement Cost Value (RCV). We help you push for RCV coverage when available.

How long do I have to file a roof damage claim in New York?

Most New York policies require you to file within 2 years of the damage event, but the sooner the better — evidence degrades and storm date correlation becomes harder over time.

What if my adjuster says it's just wear and tear?

This is the most common tactic to underpay claims. We prepare a supplement with additional documentation and, if needed, can refer you to a licensed public adjuster to dispute the finding.
